oh, awesome.

i noticed a pattern. i get lower back pains after a night of drinking. i didn't think it was a big deal. but i just found out that this specific pain is a symptom of lymphoma, or hodgkin's disease. at least it's one of the more curable cancers...

i'm not a very lucky person.

Fresh

does anyone remember the movie "Fresh" from the 90's? i randomly remembered a few scenes from the movie. one was where a crack whore offered to give Fresh (the 12 year old drug dealer in the movie) a blowjob in return for drugs. i remembered another scene where a kid was shot and killed on the basketball court because he made a layup on an older dude with a temper.

i saw the movie with my hip hop friend from middle school, Wilson (he's the reason i listen to hip hop today). we were in 6th or 7th grade. i remember both of us getting choked up at the part where the basketball player was killed. i don't think we finished watching the movie though, because Wilson blurted out "wanna play basketball?", to which i responded "YES" all too eagerly.

i'm downloading a torrent of the movie. only 128 hours to go.

burial's untrue

the hype surrounding this album is 100% justified. this music seriously destroys...i want to make music like this so bad.

gonna update this on the regular from now on

not that i have any real news to keep anyone updated on...

anyway. here's what's been on my mind as of late. bulleted list, y'all:
  • i haven't been outside since new years. yes, i've been indoors for the past month and some change. i know, it's somewhat unhealthy. i know, it's very antisocial. i know, i'm gonna get rickets. but i've been mega productive, and since i'm able to keep the creative energies flowing, i feel that going outside would be a distraction at this point.
  • on the topic of creative energies, i've been exploiting that mug to the fullest. i've been trying out as many directions as possible in my music, not really worrying about honing a particular "sound" at the moment. i figure now is the time to experiment as much as i can, since i'm not stylistically bound to anything.
  • i'm a firm believer in the idea that the workflow you use to make music has a great influence on your creativity. i know, i've heard the argument that a musician/producer would sound they way they do regardless of what equipment they use, but i really do believe that in many ways, the equipment and/or process behind creation dictates the sound. this generally applies more to sample-based music, but i think it also applies to bands and such. would jimi hendrix have been as revolutionary with an accordion? would four tet be able to try out as many ideas as he does to find something he likes without the aid of audiomulch (fucking DOPE program btw...been using it more and more)? moreover, would girl talk have a CAREER if it weren't for audiomulch? i've been thinking about this a lot. and i've been thinking of ways to incorporate new workflows into my beatmaking, because, let's face it. at the end of the day, different workflows create different ideas and sounds. it's not "all" the producer, despite popular belief.
  • acne has been leaving scars. would really like to look nice for randy's wedding. going to see a dermatologist on saturday. sucks, since i'm not insured, everything's out of pocket. that's gonna be a bit painful.
  • oh yeah...RANDY'S GETTING MARRIED!! he was my road dog throughout middle school and high school. wedding is on march 8. super super stoked.
  • azeem and i are gonna do a beat collab called "scuttlefish". we're gonna work on beats by exchanging parts via email. look out for the myspace soon.
  • new track i'm working on uses 808's. trying not to get too attached to 808's...i've seen a lot of videos on youtube where producers use nothing but 808 drums and that sound gets so stale so quick. the key to the 808 is to use it sparingly. make it bang when it needs to bang.
  • i had the worst nightmare the other night that i was sued by grand funk railroad for sampling "hooked on love". it was so real and everyone was all mad at me. man, i hope i never have to deal with anything like that...
  • i've been having other dreams, too, with all my friends, except my friends act in really unpredictable ways. i gather that this is because i feel like i don't know who my friends are anymore since i don't get to see them on a regular basis. no one to blame but myself on that one (see 2 posts below).
  • oh snap, if you're registered, PLEASE vote for obama tomorrow! don't vote for that liar and cheater hillary! and if you're a republican, don't vote at all! :)
some random tracks i've been listening to:
  • can you let me know - dj deckstream (thanks dan)
  • i'm very scared, buster. yes, at last - george pringle (a very, very lame song that uses the amen brother drum pattern sans the amen drums, a simple bassline, and a really, really hot english girl's vocals)
  • when i lay you down - sick animation (i'm usually not a fan of joke music, but the melody behind this song is really good. it sounds better than 90% of the pop music i hear on the radio, even tho this is just making fun of all that music)
  • he can only hold her - amy winehouse (no link, sorry. download it if you can tho, song is so tight)
that's it for now. uhm expect regular updates. nite!
